It might not be a surprise that Rachel Maddow takes a left-leaning approach to her media analysis, and that extends to her views on firearms issues. What might be more surprising to some is how enthusiastic she is when she gets to fire off a few rounds at a shooting range.
CBS caught up with the MSNBC host for a profile yesterday on her impassioned approach to newscasting, as well as how the issues she covers apply to her personal life. One of the most surprising parts about the profile came at the very beginning, when Rita Braver documented Maddow as she had some fun with a Colt .45 pistol and an AR-15 rifle.
“I’m a real liberal, even on, like, gun safety and gun control issues,” Maddow said. “That said, I think that shooting is fun, and I think that shooting ranges are an excellent place to both learn about guns and to freak your friends out!”
The profile went on to explore how Maddow’s passionate monologue approach was able to successfully place a spotlight on breaking issues. Maddow also elaborated on being the first openly-gay news show in America, her advocacy for LGBT issues, and the methods she uses to plan out her show.
“Storytelling is fun for me, but I also think when you’re telling a good story, it sinks in more,” said Maddow. “That’s a more influential way to communicate information rather than just reading the news.”
