WaPo Reporter: Gun Laws Fail Because Democrats ‘Are in the Pocket of the NRA’

On Wednesday, former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced a $50 million national campaign aimed at increasing support for stricter gun laws around the country. In a discussion about that issue on MSNBC, anchor Chris Jansing noted that the push for new gun laws is an uphill one, especially after the Newtown massacre resulted in no action being taken by the federal government.

The Washington Post‘s Nia-Malika Henderson added that Democrats, as well as Republicans, “are in the pocket” of the National Rifle Association and avoided casting a vote that could put them on the wrong side of that organization.

Henderson said that, where there was action taken by governments in the wake of the Newtown shootings, it was limited to local and municipal governments. She said that Bloomberg may have the effect he wants to have if he choses his state and local targets carefully.

“But, again, I think the NRA is a formidable force, and it’s a formidable force because Democrats are very much in the pocket of the NRA and they didn’t want to vote against the NRA,” she asserted.
