During his address to the 2014 Conservative Political Action Conference, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie argued that Republicans can’t just be against things, they also need to be for things. “Our ideas are better than their ideas, and that’s what we have to stand up for,” he said to applause from the crowd.
“We have to stop letting the media define who we are, and what we stand for,” Christie said later. “Because when we talk about what we’re for, no matter what state we’re in, our ideas win.”
Last year, CPAC chose not to invite Christie to speak at the conference. An anonymous “source familiar with CPAC’s internal deliberations” said at the time that the governor’s snub was mostly due to his support of modest gun control legislation, which led CPAC to believe he has a “limited future” in the Republican Party.
