One of the major highlights from CNN anchor Don Lemon‘s recent profile in GQ magazine was the shocking revelation that he pronounces sorbet as “sorbette” instead of the more common “sor-bay.” The article’s author used the apparent mispronunciation as a prime example of Lemon’s ability to convince people he knows what he’s talking about even when he is demonstrably “wrong.”
On Wednesday, in attempt to settle the debate once and for all, Lemon surprised the women of The View by showing up with a tray of — what else — lemon sorbet to share with them as he made his case. Pretty much no one on the panel or in the audience agreed with his pronunciation and co-host Nicolle Wallace went so far as to accuse him of acting like a stubborn Republican on the issue — “You are so Dick Cheney on sorbet.”
Despite what most of the world believes, the Oxford Dictionaries entry for sorbet indicates that either pronunciation is valid.
