President Donald Trump met with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin for the first time as leaders of their respective countries on Friday at the G20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany.
Watch above to see the first encounter between the two, in which they shake hands and the U.S. president delivers a pat on the back to Putin, as the former KGB agent brandishes a rare smile.
The two leaders are set to have a highly anticipated bilateral meeting during the summit, which assembles global leaders and financial experts to discuss world financial stability.
The meeting comes as U.S. intelligence agencies wage a full-scale investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, which they believe was directed by the Kremlin. Trump, who the Russians reportedly sought to have elected, has since declined to firmly denounce Russian meddling, or even accept that the Kremlin was definitively behind those efforts.
Putin has playfully denied the allegations that his government directed interference in the U.S. election, which consisted of hacking the Democratic National Committee servers, emails of Hillary Clinton’s campaign staff, and attempts to hack into voting systems just days before the election.
Trump has already met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korean President Moon Jae-in at the Hamburg Summit. Yesterday he held a press conference with Polish President Andrzej Duda in Warsaw, before delivering a speech in the city.
