Fox News’ weekend anchor Gregg Jarrett went after defense secretary nominee Chuck Hagel using stronger language than perhaps Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly or any of the other Fox opinion hosts have since the Senate hearings earlier this week.
After showing a clip of Hagel’s tense exchange with his former colleague Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), Jarrett asserted that Hagel “wasn’t a beloved member” of the Senate. “A lot of people didn’t like Chuck Hagel, and he reminds a lot of folks of Pig-Pen, you know, in the Peanuts cartoon, you know, with the swirling cloud behind him of dirt and so on and so forth.”
Washington Times columnist Charlie Hurt agreed with Jarrett’s assessment, saying that Hagel’s slip-up on “containment” of Iran was “comical except that it is also very terrifying… for him to screw up so royally on such an integral point.”
“Well, he screwed the pooch, no question about that,” Jarrett continued. Wondering if the White House is “now embarrassed” he ultimately concluded that “there’s a very low threshold of embarrassment at the White House.”
