Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski are getting married.
The news broke shortly before the start of their Thursday show. The morning show royalty tried to eschew news of their engagement on-air with a more sober discussion of James Comey, but their panel of regular guests was not going to let that happen.
Harold Ford Jr. got the ball rolling.
“First of all can I say something?” he said. “Congratulations. Congratulations.”
“Oh thank you, good good, yeah,” said Brzezinski, seemingly hoping to move on.
“Numbers have been up lately. Show’s going well.” Willie Geist joked.
“Last two month are [our] highest rated,” Scarborough deadpanned.
Economist Steve Rattner didn’t seem to be as quick on the uptake that in fact nobody was actually talking about ratings.
“But I’m reading here, there’s other things to say congratulations about,” he said.
“Steve.” Geist responded through laughter.
Scarborough then tried to steer things back to James Comey.
“What did you think of his very strong defense of the decisions he made over the course of the campaign,” he asked Mark Halperin.
Halperin, responded but not before also wishing “congratulations” on “the ratings.”
And for what it’s worth, Morning Joe’s ratings have actually never been better.
