WATCH: Iowa Car Chase Ends in Deadly Shooting After Father Calls Police on Son
19-year-old Tyler Comstock was shot and killed by Iowa police after his father, James Comstock reported his truck stolen after his son used it to go buy cigarettes. “He took off with my truck. I call the police, and they kill him,” James Comstock told The Des Moines Register. “It was over a damn pack of cigarettes. I wouldn’t buy him none. And I lose my son for that.”
Police officers pursued Tyler Comstock, who refused to stop the truck and at one point rammed the police car of Officer Adam McPherson, who later fired six shots into the truck, killed the teenager. According to James Comstock, his son was not carrying a weapon.
“They’re professionals,” Comstock’s grandfather, Gary Shepley said. “They’re trained to handle these situations. And if they panic before they even know what’s going on, then ask yourself: What if it was your child?”
In police scanner audio obtained from the incident, a police supervisor can be heard asking officers to “back off” their pursuit, a directive that was ultimately not heeded.
“So he didn’t shut the damn truck off, so let’s fire six rounds at him? We’re confused, and we don’t understand,” Shepley said.
