WATCH: G20 Protesters Face Off With Police in Germany LIVE STREAM
German police are all over Hamburg today as the city faces massive protests against the G20 Summit.
SWAT teams and riot police have engaged protesters, and reports indicate that authorities have used tear gas and water cannons to break up several violent demonstrations around the city. Some of the protests are being held against President Trump, though other groups have been spotted protesting capitalism, globalization, and the G20 Summit as a whole. Anarchist groups and violent activists are also believed to be participating in today’s events.
Thousands of people are expected to take part in the “G-20: Welcome to Hell” protest that will run through the duration of the summit. Police encountered a group of demonstrators earlier today at Hamburg’s weekly fish market, and several people were placed under arrest for throwing debris at law enforcement and attacking a police car.
It is not yet clear how many people have been injured or arrested, though reports indicate that the protests have already resulted in other kinds of property damage across Hamburg. At least 20,000 officers are on patrol, and the city is likely to experience a major police presence until the end of the G20 meetings.
