President Donald Trump will deliver remarks on Monday afternoon at a joint press conference with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore.
The question and answer portion of the news conference is likely to include more discussion about the president’s condolence call to Gold Star widow Myeshia Johnson — whose husband, Army Sgt. La David Johnson, died during an ambush in Niger.
Myeshia Johnson appeared on Good Morning America Monday to offer her first televised comments on the controversy surrounding the call. The Gold Star widow blasted Trump, saying she was “very upset and hurt” by Trump’s call.
“The only way he remembered my husband’s name is because he told me he had my husband’s report in front of him,” Mysehia said. “And that’s what hurt me the most, because if my husband is out here fighting his life for our country, and he risked his life for our country, why can’t you remember his name?”
The President defended his actions in a Tweet published shortly after Myeshia Johnson’s interview.
“I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!” Trump tweeted.
But the questions seem all but certain to continue, and it is likely Trump will be asked to addressed the matter during his joint appearance with Singapore’s Prime Minister.
The press conference is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. ET. Watch above, via the White House.
