WATCH LIVE: Sarah Huckabee Sanders Holds First White House Press Briefing Since Putin Summit
White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will hold a briefing today to discuss President Donald Trump’s latest plans and administrative agenda. The briefing is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.
It’s all but certain Sanders will face questions about the Vladimir Putin summit, and the controversial statements Trump has made since. Trump created a firestorm of criticism this week when he took Putin’s side over America’s intelligence agencies while saying America bears blame for negative diplomatic ties with Moscow.
Trump tried to walk back his prior statements yesterday by acknowledging intelligence findings about Russian interference in the 2016 election. But this afternoon, he rejected the notion that Russia will continue to meddle with America’s democratic institutions.
Sanders is also likely to face questions pertaining to Trump’s diplomatic endeavors in Europe, particularly his remarks about NATO. When Trump was in Brussels last week, he slammed the alliance’s member nations for not paying enough for in defense funding while locking horns with the heads of state in attendance. Trump also drew a lot of attention for slamming British Prime Minister Theresa May while her government was in a state of turmoil over Brexit and the resignation of Boris Johnson.
Most recently, Trump raised questions about NATO’s place in the world when he spoke to Fox News’ Tucker Carlson — both of whom talked down NATO’s mutual defense pledge.
Also worth noting — today marks the first White House briefing since July 2.
