All eyes were on the NFL today to see the reaction to President Donald Trump’s relentless attacks on the players and league over athletes kneeling during the national anthem as a protest against racial injustice. This morning, at a game in London between the Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars, the two teams set the tone for the day by kneeling en masse and standing arm-in-arm in solidarity.
With the afternoon games starting at 1 PM ET, everyone wanted to see what kinds of demonstrations would show up. While the Pittsburgh Steelers remained in the locker room — except for one player — the national anthem singer in Detroit made his own statement.
Ahead of the Detroit Lions home game against the Atlanta Falcons, singer Rico Lavelle ended his performance of the Star Spangled Banner by kneeling and raising his fist in the air — a moment that will surely be replayed a lot on news shows over the coming days.
