WATCH: NBC’s Andrea Mitchell Flabbergasted By DHS Sec. Nielsen’s Charlottesville Remarks

NBC’s Andrea Mitchell was dumbstruck today when she saw Homeland Security secretary Kirstjen Nielsen distract from President Donald Trump‘s latest controversy on Russia by…defending his remarks on Charlottesville.

The Homeland Security secretary spoke to Peter Alexander at the Aspen Security Forum on Thursday. Alexander asked what the DHS is doing to clamp down on white nationalists in the year since their march through Virginia. The deadly rally has been a recurring subject in the last few days — with media observers noting that the aftermath was one of Trump’s worst moments before the recent controversy over his meetings with Vladimir Putin.

As she fielded questions about Trump’s infamous “both sides” comments, Nielsen said at one point that “it’s not that one side is right, one side is wrong. Anybody that is advocating violence we need to work to mitigate.”

Those remarks have taken a few people aback already, and Mitchell became one of them when she asked Alexander to clarify that Nielsen was definitely talking about Charlottesville.
