WATCH: NBC’s Law & Order SVU Tackles Todd Akin’s ‘Legitimate Rape’ Controversy

NBC’s long-running legal series Law & Order has a reputation for adapting national controversies into scripts for the show. This week, the program is tackling the controversy surrounding comments made by former Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) as he sought to unseat Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) during the 2012 election cycle. Law & Order SVU will delve into that controversy this Wednesday in an episode entitled “Legitimate Rape.”

“It’s nearly impossible for a victim of legitimate rape to get pregnant,” says one actor playing an expert witness testifying in court.

“A mother to be fights back,” the narrator declares in the promo.

Akin’s comments set off a national firestorm when they were made last year. “First of all, from what I understand from doctors, that’s really rare,” Akin said of children conceived after a rape to a local Missouri television host in 2012. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
