President Obama announced the resignation of Steven Miller, acting commissioner of the Internal Revenue Service during a short statement to reporters at the White House Wednesday evening. The president confirmed that Treasury Secretary Jack Lew asked for Miller’s resignation and he accepted.
“Americans are right to be angry about it, and I am angry about it,” Obama said. “I will not tolerate this kind behavior in any agency, but especially in the IRS,” adding, “the IRS has to operate with absolute integrity.”
“I’ll do everything I can to make sure something like this never happens again,” he added, “by holding the responsible parties accountable. By putting in place new checks and safeguards. And going forward, by making sure that the law is applied as it should be in a fair and impartial way.”
Earlier today, CNN sources revealed that Miller himself had placed blame for the scandal, in which the IRS inappropriately targeted conservatives, on two “rogue” employees in the IRS’ Cincinnati office.
