Governor-elect Ralph Northam was rushed off stage at the beginning of his acceptance speech Tuesday night, after besting Republican Ed Gillespie and winning the Virginia governorship.
When Northam emerged to declare victory in the gubernatorial race, he began his speech by thanking opponent Gillespie. But before long chants from apparently pro-sanctuary city protestors brought his remarks screeching to a halt.
“Sanctuary for all!” one protestor shouted out.
A security guard rushed to Northam’s side, and began escorting him offstage.
Soon after, a number of protestors (unlikely of the same persuasion as their “sanctuary for all” cohorts) began chanting “Trump!”
The protestors were quickly removed from the hall by security, and Northam returned to the stage to continue his speech — declaring “I’m back by popular demand!”
The Virginia race is one of the first big elections since President Trump’s stunning ascent to the White House, and had Northam winning by a far bigger margin — 9 points — than either party expected.
