As President Trump opened his State of the Union address tonight, he gave a special shoutout to House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) and congratulated his survival after his horrific ordeal last year.
“Some trials over the past year touched this chamber very personally,” Trump stated. “With us tonight is one of the toughest people ever to serve in this House ― a guy who took a bullet, almost died, and was back to work three and a half months later – the legend from Louisiana, Congressman Steve Scalise.”
Scalise spent months in the hospital last year after he was shot during GOP team baseball practice. Scalise received a hero’s welcome when he returned to work several months ago, and the room erupted into applause for him once again tonight.
Scalise stood up and gestured his thanks to Trump while his nearby audience members embraced him.
