WATCH: Rex Tillerson Makes Post-Firing Statement at the State Department LIVESTREAM
Rex Tillerson will deliver a statement from the State Department press briefing room today, which will be his first public remark since President Trump fired him earlier this morning. The remarks are expected for 2:00 p.m. EST.
It is possible that Tillerson will shed some light on his departure, the details of which have been contested between the White House and the State Department. Tillerson’s colleagues have said that he only found out he was getting the axe after Trump tweeted that Mike Pompeo would replace him as Secretary of State on Tuesday. State Department Undersecretary Steve Goldstein said Trump never gave Tillerson any notice that he was about to be fired, and now Goldstein is getting kicked out of the government as well.
The chatter from the State Department seems to contradict the description Trump and the White House gave for the firing. Trump told reporters he was thinking about getting rid of Tillerson “for a long time,” suggesting that the two of them actually did talk about this before today. In the meantime, White House officials insist that informed Tillerson several days ago that he could be on his was out, with John Kelly reportedly saying the announcement could happen via tweet.
Tillerson’s ouster comes after months of reported tension between himself and Trump. Even though the president dismissed these previous stories as “fake news,” various new sources previously reported that Trump and Tillerson have spoken negatively about each other, and were in major disagreement with their approaches to foreign policy.
There was also that time Tillerson reportedly called Trump a “fucking moron.”
