Eight crew members from Red Wings airlines were onboard when the plane swerved off the runway at Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport. There were no passengers.
The plane, a Russian-built Tu-204, slammed through a highway barrier. Police spokesman Gennady Bogachyov said, “The plane went off the runway, broke through the barrier and caught fire.” One witness told Russia’s Rossiya-24 that he saw a man thrown from the plane and another described pulling victims out of the wreckage.
Yelena Krylova, chief spokeswoman for the airport, said in a televised interview, “The plane split into three pieces.” Russian officials are still determining what caused the crash, but preliminary findings indicate it was a pilot error.
