WATCH: Seth Meyers Opening Monologue at 2014 Emmy Awards
There was no singing and dancing to be seen as Seth Meyers opening the 66th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Monday night with an old-school monologue that took aim of the state of the television industry.
Joking that the Emmys are on Monday night because of last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, Meyers noted the irony that MTV still holds an award show for music videos even though they no longer show them. “That’s like network TV holding an award show and giving all the awards to cable and Netflix,” he said.
Meyers continued poking fun at his NBC home, saying that while HBO has a total of 99 nominations tonight, NBC is “not to be outdone, is also a network.”
Meyers ended by offering up an elaborate metaphor, in which television is that easy “booty call” that always up, while movies are that high-maintanence “diva” who wants you to actually get up and drive over to her house. “So thanks anyway movies, but I’m sticking with TV.”
