CBS released a preview of Charlie Rose‘s interview with Steve Bannon for 60 Minutes. This is the Breitbart chief’s first TV sit-down since his departure from the White House, and Bannon had some pointed comments to make about the Catholic Church for criticizing President Trump‘s decision to terminate the DACA program.
Bannon spoke about how the far right is not happy with the current arrangement for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, but he defended Trump for allowing the possibility of a legislative solution to the issue. Rose eventually asked Bannon for his thoughts about how Cardinal Timothy Dolan has joined those protesting the administration for rescinding protections for undocumented children.
Bannon is known for consistently faulting the Catholic Church, and in terms of DACA, he argued that their interest in protecting illegal immigrants is purely driven by economics.
“They need illegal aliens. They need illegal aliens to fill the churches, it’s obvious on the face of it. That’s what the entire Catholic bishop’s condemning. They have an economic interest in unlimited immigration, unlimited illegal immigration….as much as I respect Cardinal Dolan and the bishops on doctrine, this is not doctrine at all. I totally respect the Pope and the Catholic bishops and cardinals on doctrine. This is not about doctrine. This is about the sovereignty of the nation. In that regard they’re just another guy with an opinion.”
The full interview will air on Sunday on 60 Minutes.
