WATCH: The Dalai Lama Delivers Senate’s Opening Prayer

For the first time ever Thursday, His Holiness the Dalai Lama delivered the opening prayer in the Senate. After an introduction from Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), the Dalai Lama began his prayer in Tibetan before switching to what he called “my broken English.” He ended with his “favorite prayer,” one that he says daily and brings his “inner strength.”

It was a message the Senate could take to heart:

“As long as space remains and as long as sentient beings remain, until then may I too, remain and help dispel the misery of the world.”

The Dalai Lama also met with House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) Thursday, though when he offered to take questions from the press, Boehner reportedly “shut that down real quick.”
