Democratic gubernatorial hopeful Wendy Davis hit back today against criticism of a recent TV ad pointing out her opponent’s wheelchair-bound status and using it to criticize his record.
In an interview with KSAT, David argued that her Republican opponent Greg Abbott “rightfully had an opportunity to access the justice system when he was at the receiving end of a tragic accident,” Davis said. “But ever since he’s been actively fighting to close that door and deny access to others who have been wronged and who deserve to have their day in court.”
The ad in question criticized Abbott’s history of defending corporations and other large institutions against wrongful injury claims, despite the Attorney General’s own history of wrongful injury: he successfully won over $10 million dollars after suing a homeowner whose tree crushed his spine and permanently paralyzed him. Unfortunately for Davis, the ad was played with a very large image of a wheelchair hovering ominously in the background.
