WH Spox ‘Jokingly’ Offers Fox Anchor a Job For Pitching Trump Border Wall PR Strategy
Fox News anchor Bill Hemmer got a gentle reminder to stay in his lane when he gave some unsolicited advice to Deputy White House Press Secretary Hogan Gidley, who then testily cracked a joke about offering Hemmer a job.
On Friday morning’s edition of America’s Newsroom, Gidley was complaining that Democrats won’t agree to fund Trump’s border wall, and falsely claimed that “Seventy percent of the American people agree with” Trump on the border wall, but a new poll shows that only 28 percent of Americans think the wall should be an immediate priority, and 57 percent think Trump should compromise rather than shut down the government.
Hemmer then wondered aloud if Trump is doing enough to pitch the barrier to Americans.
“Does he explain to the American people what his position is?” Hemmer asked.
“He has done in multiple times in multiple areas,” Gidley replied.
“He is doing a ton of interviews, I get it. Maybe the Oval Office, the Rose Garden on a nice day in December?” Hemmer suggested.
“That’s a good strategy. You want to get a job over here?” Gidley cracked.
When Hemmer replied “I have a job, thank you,” Gidley responded with a triumphant “Yeah, that’s what I thought.”
Gidley may have been joking about offering Hemmer a job in the Trump communications shop, which already features former Fox News executive Bill Shine as its director. But the way things are going for Trump, Hemmer could end up turning down the chief of staff job before too long.
