The IRS scandal was one of the topics White House Senior Adviser Dan Pfeiffer discussed with George Stephanopoulos on This Week. While Pfeiffer agreed the IRS’ actions were “inexcusable,” he told the ABC host that the, in this case, the legality of the issue is “irrelevant.”
Stephanopoulos prefaced his question by noting the discussion about legality from Friday’s congressional hearing, during which outgoing IRS commissioner Steven Miller testified.
“I can’t speak to the law here. The law is irrelevant,” Pfeiffer responded. “The activity was outrageous and inexcusable, and it was stopped and it needs to be fixed so we ensure it never happens again.”
“You don’t really mean the law is irrelevant, do you?” Stephanopoulos followed up.
“What I mean is, whether it’s legal or illegal is not important to the fact that the conduct doesn’t matter,” Pfeiffer said. “The Department of Justice has said they’re looking into the legality of this. The president is not going to wait for that. We have to make sure it doesn’t happen again, regardless of how that turns out.”
Pfeiffer encouraged getting “facts first,” and seeing “what the review says after 30 days,” before jumping to conclusions.
