Who Could Be the Next Great Female Late Night Star?

Editor’s note: This post has been republished from an earlier date.

With the announcement that Chelsea Handler will be ending her show on E! later this year, America’s increasingly fragmented late night landscape will once again be without a female host. Since the dawn of television and the birth of late night, women hosts have been few and far between, from Joan Rivers’ failed attempt on Fox in 1986 to Kathy Griffin’s short-lived stint on Bravo almost 30 years later. With 8 years as host of Chelsea Lately, Handler was by far the most successful of the bunch.

With so much great female comedic talent out there, it would be a serious shame to leave the late night airwaves bereft of women when Handler leaves the scene. Here are 9 options for women who could make excellent late night hosts. Any network executives out there looking to fill out their evening schedules would be wise to give any one of these women their own show soon.
