Willie Nelson Says He Doesn’t Care if People Don’t Like His Beto Endorsement: ‘I Love Flak’
Legendary singer and songwriter Willie Nelson was on The View yesterday to promote his new album, and as part of a long and interesting interview, talked briefly about the Texas senate race between Sen. Ted Cruz and challenger Beto O’Rourke. Nelson is supporting Beto and has faced some backlash.
Whoopi Goldberg had the task of bringing up the Senate controversy.
“The legendary Willie Nelson has been making music for a long time, and now he is making headlines for his recent decision to support Texas Democrat Beto O’Rourke. His latest album of Frank Sinatra songs are called appropriately, ‘My Way.’ Please welcome the amazing Willie Nelson,” Goldberg said in her intro. The crowd went appropriately wild for the “Red Headed Stranger”.
Joy Behar then asked more about the political backlash.
“As Whoopi just said, you are making headlines yourself with your politics. You’re supporting Beto O’Rourke in Texas against Ted Cruz, the Republican,” she said. “And people are shocked at that, that you would support a Democrat. Why? Why? Do they have some misunderstanding of you?”
“I don’t know. I guess so,” Nelson replied. “Because I have been supporting Democrats all my life, you know?
“I think they have this image that you don’t,” said Behar. “Why?”
Again Willie Nelson said he didn’t know why. “I have no idea because, you know, I haven’t hidden it that much.”
Behar asked him if he was catching a lot of flak over it.
“Oh, I love flak,” he said. ‘We’re not happy until they’re not happy.”
Abby Huntsman then pursued the question. “Does it bother you that people would be upset about who you personally like politically?”
Then Willie gave the best Willie Nelson answer of the show.
“Oh not really because everybody has and opinion,” he said with comfortable ease. “Everybody has a right to an opinion. So, you know, I think I have one too.”
That’s called wisdom where I come from.
Behar pointed out then that he is performing at an event for Beto O’Rourke in Texas. “Many of your fans took tremendous issue like I said. I don’t want to repeat myself, but they took issue with this, you know,” she said. “A lot of your fans didn’t like it.”
Nelson then said “I don’t care.”
“He doesn’t care,” said Behar. “He doesn’t care so let’s just move on.”
“I don’t care. You know, they are entitled to their opinions and I’m entitled to mine.”
