Woman Pictured in Oscars’ ‘In Memoriam’ Video Is Still Very Much Alive

In addition to the major Best Picture screw-up, Sunday’s Academy Awards also pictured a living woman during its tribute to Hollywood legends who had died in the previous year.

Janet Patterson, a four-time Oscar-nominated costume designer, sadly did pass away in October. But the image used in the video was of a different woman entirely. “I am alive and well and an active producer,” the actual woman pictured — film producer Jan Chapman — told Variety.

Chapman said that she is “devastated” by the mix-up. “I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered. Janet was a great beauty and four-time Oscar nominee and it is very disappointing that the error was not picked up,” she said.

It’s not yet clear how the mix-up might have happened, other than the fact that two worked together on 1993’s The Piano.
