‘You Might Be a White Supremacist…’: Ta-Nehisi Coates Lists Examples of Trump’s Racism

Ta-Nehisi Coates gave an interview to MSNBC on Friday night, where he argued that Donald Trump‘s controversial history has all the evidence anyone really needs to prove the president’s racism.

Coates writes on African-American issues for The Atlantic, and he spoke to Chris Hayes about a piece he wrote where he pronounced Trump as the country’s “First White President.” Coates argued that Trump’s pro-white ideology was on full display throughout his business history, and Coates began by referring to the lawsuit Trump and his father faced decades ago for discriminating against black people in housing rentals.

“If you just come out and say that someone can’t judge your case because they are Mexican; if your response to the first black president is that they weren’t born in this country, despite all proof; if you say they weren’t smart enough to go to Harvard Law School, and demand to see their grades; if that’s the essence of your entire political identity you might be a white supremacist, it’s just possible.”
