‘You’re Perverting His Legacy’: CNN’s Bakari Sellers, Jeff Lord Clash Over Lord’s Trump-MLK Remark

CNN’s Bakari Sellers went off on Jeffrey Lord tonight for his comments this morning that people should consider President Trump “as the Martin Luther King of health care.” Even Anderson Cooper was a little thrown by that.

Lord, who repeatedly insisted he was comparing the strategy and not the men, explained on-air (and in a piece for earlier tonight) that King was “creating a crisis” to finally get civil rights done in Congress, just like how Trump is “withhold[ing] payments from insurance companies” to get health care done.

“He’s doing the same thing,” Lord said. “Creating a crisis to get to a negotiation. That’s the point, period.”

Sellers called this an “affront to Dr. King’s legacy” and cried, “Dr. King did not cause a crisis!”

Cooper also told Lord, “I don’t see how they’re the same.”

Lord repeatedly insisted he was not comparing the men, telling Sellers he’s misrepresenting his remarks and disputing Sellers’ charge that he was “whitewash[ing] that legacy” of Dr. King’s.

Seller told him “how dare you” and said that Lord was “perverting” King’s legacy with his remarks.
