Here’s a case of less-than-great optics.
CNN weatherman Chad Myers has been a mainstay on the network over the past several weeks, doing yeoman’s work reporting on Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Tuesday, during an appearance on Inside Politics, the forecaster discussed the damage caused by the latter storm. And during his segment, he fondly recalled a personal memory which — juxtaposed against the backdrop of a deadly hurricane — might have best been left unsaid at that moment.
“Let me show you the power that this storm had in the British Virgin Islands,” Myers said. “I stayed here for my 40th birthday. The Bitter End Yacht Club. With your little condo duplex, you get to use a boat any time you want. And it was an amazing 40th birthday.”
Myers went on to report that the Bitter End Yacht Club was destroyed — which was the reason he mentioned the resort in the first place.
In addition, Irma has caused billions of dollars in property damage, left millions without power, and has reportedly killed 12 people. Was it necessary for Myers, while reporting on the storm, to recall a lavish vacation in such detail?
We’ve appreciated Myers’s work over the past few weeks. But we have to believe he’d like to have that segment back.
