Fatal Tour Bus Crash In California Leaves 13 Dead, At Least 31 Injured
A tour bus traveling from a casino in California crashed into the back a semi-truck early this morning, leading to the deaths of 13 passengers and injuring 31 more.
The bus had departed the Red Earth Casino in Salton City and was en route to Los Angeles when it wrecked into the truck on the I-10 freeway near Palm Springs.
According to NBC Los Angeles, the truck driver also suffered major injuries and had been taken to a hospital for treatment. Firefighters were having to scour the wreckage for survivors.
The Riverside County Coroner’s office confirmed 13 people aboard the bus were killed in the disastrous crash that shut down the entire westbound 10 Freeway west of Indian Canyon Road. Traffic was being diverted off the freeway at the Indian Avenue offramp, and it wasn’t clear when lanes would reopen.
Rescuers continued to search the wreckage for more victims. Pictures from the scene showed firefighters using ladders to get into the passenger compartment of the bus, which had been peeled back from the vehicle’s undercarriage about one third of its length.
The wreck was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 5:17 AM local time.
