The George Zimmerman murder trial for the 2012 shooting of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin is set to begin on Monday, June 10th in Seminole County, Florida. Proceedings will begin with jury selection with Circuit Judge Debra Nelson presiding. Defense attorney Mark O’Mara will represent Zimmerman and the lead prosecutor for the state of Florida will be Bernie de la Rionda.
Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder for the shooting of Martin, who was unarmed at the time. The defendant has claimed that he shot Martin in self-defense, citing Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law. During a pre-trial hearing, Judge Nelson ruled that photos alleging drug use and gun ownership by Martin would not be admissible in the defense’s opening statements.
