Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) posted a doctored victory video on Election Night that depicted President Donald Trump and his allies being brutally assaulted by Newsom and others in a fabricated professional wrestling setting.
Tuesday night’s high-profile elections were hotly anticipated as the first big electoral test of Trump’s second term, as Republicans tried to hold on to the governor’s mansion in Virginia for a term-limited incumbent, flip the governor’s seat in New Jersey, and fend off an ultra-progressive mayoral frontrunner in New York City.
But perhaps the most direct challenge to Trump came on California’s single-issue 2025 ballot — the Prop 50 push to redistrict the state in response to a Trump push in states like Texas.
Things did not go well from the start. Former Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) defeated Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears in a race that was called in less than half an hour.
New Jersey was the next domino to fall as Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) beat Trump-endorsed former state assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli (R-NJ). Then, Queens Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani (D-NY) easily defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) in a race that Trump was heavily involved in.
Finally, seconds after polls closed, Newsom’s Prop 50 passed by nearly 30 points.
Newsom — who has made a second career out of satirizing Trump’s blunt and meme-heavy social media style — celebrated by posting
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) slams Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) pounded Trump border czar Tom Homan ringside, and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) shocked Trump Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller as he came off the turnbuckle by turning the tables.
Newsom captioned the video “Now that’s what we call a takedown.”
