Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC) was jeered by constituents when he told them he believes President Donald Trump “supports our constitution.”
Republicans have faced raucous and hostile constituents at town halls in red states, with voters angry about job cuts and the economy getting outsized media attention. The town halls have also been an outlet for vocal complaints about Trump’s use of executive branch power — or abuse, as they see it.
That was certainly the case Thursday night when Edwards held a town hall in Asheville with angry and at times profane residents.
In one exchange, moderator and WTZQ Radio General Manager Mark Warwick read out a question from a constituent who asked “Why are you doing nothing while Trump destroys the U.S. Constitution?”
The question drew a standing ovation from many in the crowd.
Edwards began by suggesting there were many in the crowd who did not vote for Trump, then drew jeers and heckling with his own assessment of Trump’s fidelity to the United States Constitution:
MARK WARWICK: Our next question or comment comes from is either SB or JB. ZIP code 28804. Regarding the future of American democracy. Is there a SB or a– here today? What are you do–? Why are you doing nothing while Trump destroys the U.S. Constitution?(CROWD STANDS AND APPLAUDS)REP. CHUCK EDWARDS: I think I think I sense a–. I think I sense maybe a faction in this
room of folks that that might not have voted for President Trump.(LAUGHTER AND JEERS).And. And and and and and I’ll say that I happen to believe very much that President Trump supports our Constitution.(SUSTAINED JEERS).And. I and– and I sleep good at night knowing that every vote that I cast is in support of our Constitution and your freedoms and and and limited government.
