Democratic National Committee vice chair David Hogg named Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) as the exact type of fiery leader the Democratic Party needs right now as he faces a potential reelection.

Hogg joined The Breakfast Club on Friday, where host Charlamagne Tha God threw out names of specific Democrats to get Hogg’s take on what lawmakers he sees as properly representing the party. Hogg has faced backlash from Democrats over the announcement that he’ll be helping to spend millions in primary elections to encourage younger and more diverse voices in the party.

Critics have said Hogg’s effort is inappropriate since he holds a vice chair position in the DNC. Members will be voting in June on whether to redo the election that got Hogg the position in the first place.

On The Breakfast Club, Hogg complimented Democrats like Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (D) — “he has a huge amount of favorability for a reason in Pennsylvania” — and Pete Buttigieg — “clearly was a very good secretary of transportation given the situation that we’re in right now” — but his highest praise came with the mention of Crockett’s name. He also called Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) an “inspiration,” applauding her recent Fighting Oligarchy tour with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

“I love her. She is amazing. I think that people want to see somebody who fights and calls out the bullshit ultimately. I think

that’s what Jasmine does,” Hogg said. “And we need a hell of a lot more people that are out there that are willing to do just that and call people out on their BS and not say, ‘Oh my God, Republicans are going to criticize me for saying this.’ Screw that. They’re going to criticize you no matter what.”

Crockett is a lawmaker known for not mincing words, sometimes earning backlash. She’s said Republicans are “inherently” violent, accused Democratic donors of wanting the “safest white boy” for 2028, and called Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) “hot wheels,” something critics took as a crack against the fact that Abbott is in a wheelchair, which Crockett denied.

Crockett, Hogg argued, is the type of candidate that his effort is meant to support.

“I think Jasmine is, frankly, the type of leader that we’re really looking to support in some senses, right? Somebody who is out there that frankly doesn’t give a damn what the other side — at least the elected Republicans in Congress — say,” he said. “They say what they believe in and at least, you know, even if you don’t agree with her, you know what she stands for, because she makes it very clear. And people are really craving that right now.”

Crockett, he added, has an “authenticity.”

Hogg claimed during his interview that Democrats have quietly expressed

support for his primary effort, though they are too fearful to publicly do so and upset their colleagues.

“I’ve heard from a lot of members of Congress that have thanked me for doing this,” he said. “Even some not so young members of Congress that thank me for doing this and said that this is dramatically needed, but they don’t want to speak out about it because they obviously don’t wanna say that some of their colleagues shouldn’t necessarily be there anymore. But look, I’m willing to do that. I don’t care.”
