President Donald Trump on Tuesday included Russia’s Alex Ovechkin while listing off great Canadian hockey players next to Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Carney visited the Oval Office for a meeting with Trump on Tuesday. When that meeting was opened to press, Trump reaffirmed his mission to make Canada the 51st state of the U.S. — which Carney rejected to his face — and fielded a host of questions regarding trade deals and his sweeping tariffs.
At one point, Trump praised the U.S.’s northern neighbor and referenced a few things he likes about the country — including hockey.
“Canada’s a very special place to me,” Trump said. “I know so many people that live in Canada. My parents had relatives that lived in Canada — my mother in particular — and, no, I love Canada… I have a lot of respect for the Canadians. Wayne Gretzky, I mean how good — the ‘great one.’ You happen to have a very, very good hockey player right here on the Capitals who I have a lot of respect [for]. He is a big, tough cookie, too. He just broke the record; and he’s a great guy. You know, we had the team here and I got to know a lot of the players. But no, Canada is a very special place.”
