British tennis star Emma Raducanu stopped play in the middle of a match Monday after she was distracted by a crying baby in the stands.

Raducanu faced world no 1. Aryna Sabalenka in the second round of the Cincinnati Open. In the third and final set of the match, Raducanu was preparing to serve when she suddenly stepped away. She then turned to the umpire.

“It’s been like 10 minutes!” Raducanu yelled over to the umpire.

“It’s a child!” the umpire fired back. “Do you want me to send the child out the stadium?”

Raducanu shrugged at the question, seemingly suggesting that she wouldn’t be opposed to such an extreme measure. Then, the on-court microphones picked up multiple members of the audience saying, “Yes,” in response to the question.

Raducanu looked at the umpire and waited for a verdict.

“I can call in,” the umpire said, “but we need to continue for the moment.”

Play resumed moments later. To Raducanu’s credit, the effects

of the distraction weren’t immediately apparent in her play. In fact, it was Sabalenka who made an uncharacteristic error in a return shot to award Raducanu the next point.

The Belarusian, however, would go on to win the last set to advance to the round of 16.
