CNN NewsNight host Abby Phillip added some humorous context to Scott Jennings’ claim that President Donald Trump’s approval rating has risen.

On Tuesday’s show, Phillip pointed to some polling ahead of next year’s midterm election, indicating that Democrats currently have an advantage. According to the latest Gallup poll showing that 48% of Americans consider themselves Democrats, compared to 41% who identify with the Republican Party. Before last year’s election, Republicans led Democrats.

“One curious thing, [CNN data dude] Harry Enten pointed this out this morning, in the first part of this year, the generic ballot – Democrats versus Republicans – was basically tied,” Phillip said. “Now, Democrats have an advantage.”

“Harry also did a report this week showing that Trump’s job approval has actually gone up,” Jennings replied.

At this juncture, Jennings completed his thought while Phillip jumped in as both said, “By one point.”

“Scott, he’s deeply underwater,” Phillip added, alluding to a Reuters poll released this week showing Trump with a -14% approval rating. “It’s 56 to 42.”

“The president said today he’d be happy to meet with the Democrats if they stop holding the government hostage,” Jennings stated, while noting that Trump said he would be willing to meet with Democrats amid the ongoing government shutdown, which began on Oct. 1 after the Senate failed to pass a

bill to fund the government beyond Sept. 30. “And my strong belief is that they would wind up negotiating on a number of issues, and they would come to an agreement. The president doesn’t want to negotiate under duress.”

Seven Democratic votes are needed to overcome a 60-vote procedural threshold in the chamber, which Republicans control 53-47. Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and his caucus sought an extension of Covid-era healthcare premium subsidies under the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as Obamacare. However, Republicans have not budged.
