Donald Trump Jr. was fact-checked live on-air Monday by NewsNation host Connell McShane after claiming the suspect in a deadly Minnesota shooting was a Democrat.
Trump Jr. appeared on NewsNation Now when the discussion turned to political violence in the US, days after Minnesota State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband were fatally shot in their Brooklyn Park home. Authorities say the suspected gunman, Vance Boelter, also shot State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife in a related attack. Both survived.
While discussing the case, Trump Jr. blamed Democrats for most political violence, pointing to the suspect’s past reappointment to a bipartisan workforce board by Democratic Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
McShane said, “Given the time we’re having this conversation, do you have any thoughts on political violence and or the political rhetoric in this country? You know what happened in Minnesota recently, but of course, your family is familiar with threats and political threats.”
“Yeah, my father’s been shot at – you know, the other side has tried jailing me,” Trump Jr. responded. “You know, they talk a lot about the rhetoric and the violence, and yet it seems to be mostly caused by them. You know, the summer, the 2020 summer of love, did not seem like a summer of love. The politicians at high-level places encouraging people to attack my father did not seem fair. When referring to Boelter, Trump Jr. said, “The guy that committed those atrocities this weekend is a Democrat that worked for Tim Walz that had the flyers about the no Kings thing in there.”
McShane cut him off and said, “I’m not sure about that, by the way, from what I saw. I think he voted for your dad.”
Trump Jr. responded, “I’ll believe that when I see it.”
