O’Malley told Matthews that he believes there is a “sickness in our soul as a nation.” “The worship of violence and the glorification of violence,” O’Malley said.
“We can’t stop there being mental illness; it’s part of being born,” Matthews said. He pivoted to films, saying that when he goes to the movies he is struck by the amount of violence in the coming attractions.
“Some movies I think people go for the absolute thrill of seeing a lot of people killed,” Matthews opined. “How do you stop them from doing it?”
O’Malley did not answer directly, but he did say that events
“You going to stop people from going to see Django,” Matthews asked, referring to an upcoming Quentin Tarantino film. “How do you stop people from putting out idoit movies that are just people — one person after antoher getting killed?”
“You can’t stop that, Chris,” O’Malley said. “What you can do is put sensible restrictions in place.”
