Anthony Bourdain stopped by The Tonight Show this week, but here’s some of what you didn’t see. In an online-only video, Bourdain talked about some of today’s most popular food trends, including truffle oil, Kobe beef sliders, juice bars, rosé and, of course, avocado toast. As you might expect, he held nothing back.

Some of the trends he thinks are totally okay. See: rosé. If it’s summer, and you’re eating a steak, go for it. It’s good. There’s nothing wrong with it. Ultimately, he said, “You can laugh at it, but in the end, you know you want it.”

Truffle oil did not get that same treatment. Bourdain called it “about as edible as Astroglide and made with the same stuff.”

Kobe beef sliders suffered a similar fate:

“There is no food crime worse. In fact, the very epicenter of douchedom is the Kobe slider. If you see Kobe slider on a menu at a restaurant that you’ve walked into, turn on your heels and leave. No good will come of this. It will just be a sea of high-fiving hedge funders and people you do not want anywhere near you.”

Ouch.

He also has absolutely nothing good to say about brunch. “It’s a horrible, cynical way of unloading leftovers and charging three times as much as you ordinarily charge for breakfast,” he

says, adding that “brunch is just breakfast with an orange twist and a strawberry fan on it and a free glass of really crappy mimosas.” And, as much fun as brunch may be, he’s definitely right.
