Dozens of people were killed in Nice, France during Bastille Day celebrations earlier today.
A truck crashed into the large crowd and there are reports of shots fired. And a Nice newspaper’s Twitter account tweeted out a picture with the caption “The truck riddled with bullets”:
They also tweeted out more information from the scene:

The mayor of Nice tweeted that people should remain in their homes:
There are unconfirmed reports that 30 people are dead.

UPDATE –– 6:22 pm EDT: It’s unclear yet whether this was a panned attack, but you’ll recall that after the November terrorist attacks in France, a state of emergency was called. Well, it continued and was extended into this year, but French President Francois Hollande said it would end later this month.
UPDATE –– 6:31 pm EDT: There are now reports that up to 60 people are dead.
UPDATE –– 6:36 pm EDT: Authorities have had to quash rumors of a fire at the Eiffel Tower. There are also unconfirmed reports of hostages being taken at a nearby hotel.

UPDATE –– 7:22 pm EDT: There are new reports that the death toll is up to 73 and the truck was apparently loaded with guns and grenades.

UPDATE — Friday 7:00 a.m. EDT: The number of dead in the Nice attack has risen, and two Americans are confirmed dead at this time.
