The former mother-in-law of the Lakewood Church shooter revealed the deceased mother suffered from schizophrenia and there had been numerous attempts to help her.
Walli Carranza told KHOU-11 out of Dallas in an exclusive interview that 36-year-old Genesse Moreno had a well known history with mental illness, but she was always allowed to own firearms.
“She had a particular kind of schizophrenia that caused her to become violent,” Carranza said. “She threatened her husband, my own son, and we still couldn’t get intervention.”
She added that she had contacted Child Protective Services and others about her daughter-in-law. The grandmother said there were “six years of red flags” before the church shooting.
“We’ve asked for help from police, and received it many times, but she was still allowed to own guns,” Carranza said.
Neighbors previously recounted stories to Fox 26 out of Houston of Moreno brandishing weapons, including firearms, to intimidate others.
Moreno opened fire after entering Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church on Sunday. The shooter was the only one killed, but a man suffered a leg injury and her son, believed to be around five, was also injured. He is currently fighting for his life, according to his grandmother, who called the young boy a “fighter.” He suffered a head injury in the shooting, and he has also faced health issues after being born prematurely.
