MSNBC host Rev. Al Sharpton attacked President Donald Trump, on Monday, for releasing files pertaining to the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In a statement Monday afternoon, the civil right leader accused the president of releasing the files to distract the public from the Jeffrey Epstein story.
“We need to be crystal clear on the fact that Trump releasing the MLK assassination files is not about transparency or justice, it’s a desperate attempt to distract people from the firestorm engulfing Trump over the Epstein files and the public unraveling of his credibility among the MAGA base,” Sharpton said. “Throughout his career, Dr. King was the target of relentless government surveillance and character assassination. It’s the same federal law enforcement that followed his every step and sought to silence his voice that is now using him as a pawn in a cheap political stunt.”
Rev. Sharpton added that he stands behind Dr. King’s two living children — Martin Luther King III and Bernice King — who issued a statement opposing the release of the records.
