Former President Donald Trump made a jaw-dropping claim about the Congressional Medal of Honor as he recalled giving the civilian Presidential Medal of Freedom to mega-MAGA donor Miriam Adelson.
Trump has taken heat from many military veterans over things like his infamous quote — reported by Trump’s then-Chief of Staff John Kelly — calling American war dead “suckers” and “losers.”
On a European trip as president, Trump refused to go to a cemetery in France to honor American war dead, saying in Kelly’s presence, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.”
During a speech at his Bedminster golf club following yet another chaotic press conference, Trump dropped another strange quote — especially in context with the “suckers and losers” quote he denies saying — about military heroes.
In an aside about giving the civilian honor to Adelson, Trump said the Congressional Medal of Honor isn’t as good — and gave a bizarre, flippant explanation:
But I really. I have to say, Miriam, I watched Sheldon sitting so proud in the White House when we gave Miriam the Presidential Medal of Freedom. That’s the highest award you can get as a civilian.It’s the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor. But civilian version.It’s actually much better because everyone gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, that’s soldiers, they’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so
many times by bullets, or they’re dead.She gets it, and she’s (laughs) a healthy, beautiful woman.(APPLAUSE)And they’re rated equal.But she got the Presidential Medal of Freedom and she got it for her–. And it’s through committees and everything else. She’s done an incredible job on addiction as a doctor and so many other things.And I watched your husband sitting at the White House and he was so proud. I’ve never seen him so proud. He didn’t like to show it because he was cool. Right? But he was so proud of you.
