Edan Alexander, the final American citizen held hostage by Hamas, was freed by the terror group on Monday after 584 days in captivity in Gaza.

Axios’s Barak Ravid posted IDF video footage showing Alexander as he walked alongside IDF soldiers. He was alert and smiling as he moved through a secure area.

In a separate video, his mother is seen taking a phone from Steve Witkoff, the Trump administration’s Special Envoy to the Middle East.

Holding the phone to her ear, she shouts, “They just released a photo of you… I love you so much!”

The two were later reunited, according to photos shared on X by the IDF:

Alexander, 20, was serving in the IDF’s Golani Brigade when he was captured during the Hamas attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

President Donald Trump announced Alexander’s release in a statement ahead of his trip to the Middle East on his Truth Social Page on Sunday evening.

“I am happy to announce that Edan Alexander, an American citizen who has been held hostage since

October 2023, is coming home to his family,” Trump wrote. “I am grateful to all those involved in making this monumental news happen. This was a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators — Qatar and Egypt — to put an end to this very brutal war and return ALL living hostages and remains to their loved ones. Hopefully this is the first of those final steps necessary to end this brutal conflict. I look very much forward to that day of celebration!”

Alexander grew up in New Jersey and holds dual Israeli-American citizenship.

He had moved to Israel and joined the military before the war began.

Hamas agreed to release Alexander without any conditions in the hopes of a ceasefire with Israel.
