A stunning scene played out at multiple hockey games in Canada — as fans angered by the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump booed the U.S. National Anthem.
As is custom during games in which an American team visits a Canadian team, the U.S. anthem is played before the Canadian anthem. And at games in Ottawa and Calgary, it did not receive a positive response.
First at the Ottawa Senators vs. Minnesota Wild game, the fans in attendance roundly jeered the Star-Spangled Banner — before joining together to belt out the Canadian anthem.
And then later, hockey fans in Calgary likewise booed the American anthem ahead of the Calgary Flames’ match-up with the Detroit Red Wings.
Foreign policy expert Ian Bremmer noted how rare it is for Canadians to boo the U.S. anthem.
“Only time I’ve ever seen Canadians boo the US National Anthem was during the Iraq war,” Bremmer wrote.
