House Republicans succeeded in pushing through President Donald Trump’s sprawling fiscal package on Thursday, which passed by the narrowest of possible margins – one vote.
The 215–214 vote followed a turbulent 48 hours that saw late-night committee sessions, procedural skirmishes, and lobbying by House Speaker Mike Johnson to get Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” over the line.
Johnson, whose credibility was on the line, oversaw a Rules Committee marathon of 21 straight hours to hammer out 42 pages of last-minute amendments to the already 1,000-page-plus legislation.
Two Republicans – Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Warren Davidson (R-OH) – broke ranks to vote against the bill, joining a united Democratic opposition.
The sweeping piece of domestic legislation proposes to extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, slash $1.5 trillion in federal spending, and impose work requirements on Medicaid recipients. It would also repeal green energy tax credits introduced under the Inflation Reduction Act, which was a key targets for conservatives seeking to roll back Biden-era policies.
All eyes now turn to the Senate, which will take up the bill next.
