“I think right now what we need from the federal government is to secure the border,” Jindal said on New Day. “We don’t need a thousand page bill, we don’t need amnesty, we don’t need a comprehensive approach, we don’t need the Gang of Eight approach, we don’t need the Jeb Bush approach…”
“But Governor, you’re being criticized in part for only having a border strategy, not having a strategy for how to deal with 11 million people who are in this country,” Berman said. “Donald Trump just gave a limited plan… Jeb Bush has a more evolved plan where he does call for legal status. What would you do with the 11 million people here?”
Jindal responded that trusted that the American people would be “pragmatic and compassionate” about illegal immigrants already in
“Will you rule out legal status. Can you ever support legal status?” Berman asked.
“I’m saying let’s not even have that conversation before securing the border,” he responded.
“So you refuse to take a position?” Berman pressed again.
“When you say ‘pragmatic and compassionate,’ that sounds like a path to citizenship,” noted co-host Alisyn Camerota. But Jindal responded that every other time Congress tried to address border security and amnesty, they’ve only gotten amnesty.
“I think we’re not going to get an answer to that question no matter how hard we push right now, what to do with the 11 million,” Berman concluded.
